Is Visio or PowerPoint better for an org chart?
PowerPoint, if the chart is headed for a deck or a page that everyone can open. Visio, if the chart is large and you want connectors that follow a box when you move it. Both are drawings, so both are out of date after the first reorganization. A chart generated from your directory is the third option.

What does PowerPoint do well?
It is already on every desk, and the chart ends up in a deck anyway. A hierarchy SmartArt or a slide of rounded rectangles and lines is enough for a team or a department. Everyone can open the file, and it exports to PDF in one step. The same file opens in Google Slides and Keynote. Past about thirty boxes the slide gets cramped and you start splitting the chart across slides by hand.
What does Visio do well?
It is a diagramming tool, so the parts of the job PowerPoint fights you on are the parts Visio was built for. Connectors glue to shapes and re-route when you move a box. The Organization Chart Wizard in the desktop app builds the whole tree from an Excel or CSV file with a name column and a reports-to column, and can split a large org across pages with hyperlinks between them. The cost is the license: the desktop app needs a Visio plan, and the web version does not include the wizard.
Which one should you pick?
- A team or a department going into a deck: PowerPoint. Start from a PowerPoint org chart template and retitle the boxes.
- A whole company you are drawing from a spreadsheet: Visio, for the wizard and the connectors. A Visio template gives you the shapes.
- Either one, from a CSV, without opening the app first: the free org chart maker draws the tree in the browser and downloads a PowerPoint or a Visio file with every person as a native shape.
- A chart that has to stay current: neither. A chart generated from the directory re-syncs on its own.
What do both get wrong?
They go stale. A chart drawn in PowerPoint or Visio is a picture of the org on the day someone drew it. Nothing connects it to the directory where joiners and leavers are recorded, so somebody has to notice the change and redraw the boxes. The file forks into copies the moment it is emailed, and each copy drifts on its own.
If keeping the chart current is the problem, generate the chart from the directory and re-sync it on a schedule. The Sprooster vs PowerPoint and Visio comparison walks through when the drawing is still the right choice.
Where do you get a template?
The templates page has a company, a department, and a small business org chart as PowerPoint and Visio files, plus a CSV starter, with no email gate. Each one also opens in the free maker, where you can swap in your own people and download it again.
