What is the actual difference?
A chart drawn in PowerPoint or Visio is an artifact: a picture of the org on the day someone drew it. A chart generated from your directory is a view of live data: it shows whatever the manager fields in Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, or BambooHR say right now.
That one difference drives everything else. An artifact needs a person to notice a change, open the file, and move the boxes. A view updates because the data did.

When is PowerPoint or Visio the better choice?
Honestly, often:
- A small, stable org. Ten people and one change a year is not a data problem. A slide is fine.
- A designed graphic. A board deck sometimes wants a chart with specific styling, annotations, and layout choices. Drawing tools exist for exactly this.
- Sketching a structure that does not exist yet. Drawing a proposal is drawing work, and slides are quick at it.
- Environments that cannot use SaaS. A generated chart needs a connection to your directory; an air-gapped network rules that out.
When does a generated chart win?
- The company is past a few dozen people, or changes monthly. Every reorg turns a drawn chart into homework with a deadline nobody set.
- More than one copy of the chart is circulating and they disagree. A link cannot fork.
- New hires use the chart to learn who is who, which only works if it is right.
- The people data already lives in Entra ID, Google Workspace, or BambooHR, so redrawing it by hand means maintaining the same facts twice.
